Fireplace Repairs After Winter: Record the Damage First

Vitcas Fireplace Render for suitable masonry substrates

May allows you to plan fireplace repairs without rushing before heating the house. Start by recording defects in a cold, unused appliance. Chipping in the chamber, cracks in the casing, and flaking of the finish require different assessments, even if they look similar from a distance.

Divide the inspection into three areas

Examine the hot working part, the casing structure, and the visible finish separately. For each change, note the location, size, and previous condition. Pay attention to whether the damage runs through several layers or occurs at a fixture.

A loose element or change in support requires clarification before applying new material. The outer layer should not cover up a problem whose cause remains inside. If the enclosure needs to be opened, plan access together with the scope of the repair.

Select the product for the proper layer

Fireplace Render serves as a suitable thicker layer on a compatible masonry substrate. Heat Resistant Plaster is a material for a specific smooth finish. Do not treat them as substitutes based on the package colour.

Heat Resistant Filler has its own tasks in appropriate minor repairs and joints. It does not address movement of the entire wall by simply filling a crack. Check the current instructions, substrate preparation, and the scope of the specific defect.

Determine the sequence before starting

In the plan, include preparation, execution of the actual layer, its curing, and required drying. The next finish should be applied to a substrate prepared according to the instructions of the entire system. A longer break in use does not justify skipping these steps.

Keep photos of exposed parts and the names of the materials used. After the planned restart, check the fireplace again when cold. In the autumn, you will compare specific spots with the repair record instead of starting the assessment by assuming that every visible crack appeared just now.
