Zircon Paint: When Is a Refractory Coating Needed?

Vitcas Zircon Paint refractory coating packaging

Zircon Paint is selected for a specific refractory job, not as a universal paint for every furnace. It is a protective coating used in appropriate industrial setups. Before purchase, determine the substrate material, temperature, and substances the surface will come into contact with.

Start with process conditions

Vitcas Zircon Paint is a coating with a declared operating temperature of up to 1750°C, described, among other things, for suitable bricks and monolithic refractory linings. The manufacturer lists applications with molten glass and certain metal alloys. These conditions differ from painting the exterior housing of a household device.

A higher temperature rating does not establish suitability for every process. Check chemical compatibility, the type of contact, and the role of the coating in the chosen construction. Information for one installation should not automatically be applied to another process.

Evaluate the refractory lining before coating

The substrate must meet application requirements. Detached parts, damaged mounting, or substantial areas of missing material need a separate repair assessment. A surface coating will not restore the entire thickness of a damaged lining.

Confirm the product variant, preparation, and method of application. The ready-mixed coating and dry mix may have different instructions. The execution plan should also include drying time and start-up, instead of ending with the application of the last layer.

Differentiate between refractory protection and metal finishing

Vitcas black heat resistant paint is a different product, intended for properly prepared surfaces in the described applications. It is not selected interchangeably with Zircon Paint based on packaging colour or temperature alone.

If you are considering coating for a garden oven, confirmation is needed for the specific substrate and function, including contact with food. Do not assume that industrial applications provide such confirmation. For process work, retain the specification, product identification and record confirming application suitability before covering the entire area.
